Ok, one more from Ars.
There apparently was more to NBC’s decision to pull its shows out of the iTunes Store than we were led to believe. Apple is reportedly pushing the concept of cutting the prices of TV shows to 99ยข.
(Via Ars Technica.)
So at $.99 an episode, we could be seeing a fundamental change in how television is consumed. I consider it like this: how much do you pay for cable each month, and how many shows do you watch? If you take a $40/month cable bill, that would be $540/year spent on television. You could buy what, 27 different shows, given a 20 episode per season production rate?
Well the studios will balk at this, it may be in their long term favor to do this. At this price point, those buying on a whim will be much greater, driving up a demand for devices to play these files, which could in the long run drive sales for more digital content. Furthermore, at $.99, is it worth your time to use bit torrent?
Also, for those doubting this could happen, remember that Steve Jobs is on the board of directors at Disney, and is also their largest shareholder. Yeah, this is still a rumor, but I’m hopeful.
